Megan’s Experience

I am a Licensed Master Social Worker working toward my LCSW and my Registered Play Therapy Certification under the supervision of Shannon Herron LCSW, RPT-S, and now under the guidance of Bonnie Barclay, LCSW at Creekside. I have a BA in Psychology and a Master of Science in Social Work, both from the University of Tennessee, and I have over 21 years of experience in the field. I have always been fascinated with brain development, early childhood development, different cultures and languages, and how communication and relationships affect human development. These interests led me first to work in a community mental health agency, helping new parents get a healthy start with their babies and young children, and helping families access mental health resources. After that I worked with immigrant and refugee populations in Knoxville, refining my Spanish and learning about the strengths and challenges facing the Hispanic/Latino population in East Tennessee. Then I went to work at the Tennessee School for the Deaf, where I have been for over 13 years, learning about Deaf culture, improving my ASL, helping students improve their emotional and social skills, and helping families provide a healthy environment for their children.

My Approach & Values

All children deserve a safe, accepting and affirming space to heal and overcome challenges to be successful and healthy. I enjoy partnering with children and families to help create that space. I think the earlier intervention happens, the more effective it can be, so I am drawn to working with young children. Understanding that growth and healing can happen at any age, I’m happy to work with other individuals using my background to address mood disorders, trauma, attachment issues, and parenting. I believe the therapeutic relationship is the key to finding each client’s individualized path to healing. I use evidence-based strategies and techniques including play therapy, talk therapy, and art therapy to help individuals express and understand emotions, process trauma and other life experiences, and learn skills for building and maintaining healthy relationships. I speak fluent Spanish and I am competent in communicating in ASL.
